Took a while to sketch and paint this one. I like taking my finger through the little trails and seeing where I wind up. Life is full of twists and turns. Some we can see coming; others we can’t. This painting tries to capture that twisting and turning that we all face in life.

I remember the night I sketched this out. I was reflecting on some of our blog conversation about stepping out and trying something new. When I pulled out a fresh, clean piece of watercolor paper I wanted to be open to whatever came out. I started drawing the larger shapes first. Then I started adding the shapes inside of the larger shapes. Then I started making the labyrinth trails and it just “took on a life of its own.” It was a joyous experience artistically. I have about 5 hrs in that piece, I’d say. Thank you for your encouragement!

Yes sir! Probably around ten or fifteen years ago. Not knowing its rich ancient history as a spiritual practice, my immediate knee-jerk reaction was to write it off as a rather empty, new-agey fad. Nonetheless, I decided to set all that aside enter into the experience with an open mind and heart. As I walked, I found myself amazed at the rich insights and connections that arose in my mind and heart as I reef
Excited how like walking it paralleled my own spiritual journey with all of its unexpected twists and turns, and how even when I sometimes felt that I was so much in the dark (or in the light as the case may be) that all of this was inexorably leading my deeper and deeper into my Center, my Soul, my inner Hear and True Self, that “place” where heaven and earth are one.
It has been a long time since I thought about all of that, so this is a moment of grace for me, I suppose, so thank you and your art for putting me back in touch with one of life’s sacred moments.

I’m very grateful to learn of your experience and thankful that in a small way this painting was helpful in reconnecting you to it! It is interesting how experiences like this focus our attention and open our hearts preparing us for encounters with the spiritual presence of God. These types of experiences have always confirmed, for me at least, that God is seeking active engagement with those who are seeking God in return. God’s pursuit of us is a lovely aspect of God’s character. God longs to know us despite how our spiritual wanderlust often leads us down opposing paths. Labyrinths capture this journey in a wonderful way.
